Breath of Island

Installation Art · Sensory Experience

Summer 2021 / CN

Materials: Marimo spheres, gas collection device, bubble dome, exhibition boat

The monumental completion of the Three Gorges Dam stands as a bold declaration of human dominance over the Yangtze River—entwined with praise, controversy, and competing interests. Yet, with its rise came the silent submersion of upstream islands, villages, and cities—once vibrant, now forgotten beneath the water's surface. This project reimagines those submerged islands as living organisms, simulating the slow, rhythmic breathing of underwater creatures. Through this poetic gesture, the installation invites viewers to sense the pulse of a drowned landscape—a memory that persists, gently surfacing in the present.
